The Vitreo-retinal Department treats a wide variety of conditions that affect the structures at the back of the eye, including the retina (the light-sensitive film in the eye). We are one of the largest vitreo-retinal department in the UK. Our team consists of five Consultants, three senior Fellows and a dedicated Vitreo-retinal coordinator, who streamlines the patient experience from referrals to discharge.

Our team undertakes surgical treatment for conditions such as retinal detachment, macular holes, epiretinal membranes, bleeds in the gel of the eye diabetic eye disease, complex cataracts and complications from cataract surgery.

Our vitreo-retinal team is often involved in the immediate and long term treatment of eye injuries and we currently have a burgeoning research team in this area. We also have specialists who deal with vitreo-retinal conditions in children.

Investigations:

We offer a range of investigations including scanning of the retina using the latest technology and ultrasound scans.

Treatment:

Our main treatment modality is through surgery on the retina and vitreous gel. We have operating lists every day between Monday and Friday that we utilise to conduct both emergency and planned operations. We also have team available during the weekends to perform emergency retinal detachment and ocular injury surgery. Almost all the surgery that we perform is on a day-case basis. We have excellent theatre facilities at BMEC that enables us to perform cutting edge surgery with the latest techniques on a day case basis.

Clinics and Referrals:

As the largest vitreo-retinal department in the region, we see and treat patients from all over the Midlands area and beyond.

Most of our clinics are held at BMEC but we also have clinics at Sandwell General Hospital.
