BMEC Surgical Skills Facility

Wet Lab

BMEC Surgical Skills Facility (BMEC SSF), located at the first floor, has been completely refurbished and it is funded to assist the ophthalmic trainees locally and nationally, to acquire the surgical skills in the field, for them to be the surgeons of the future.

The facility has got four microscopes, one of which is a brand new Leica microscope with a HD camera, three Legacy phaco machines and one Acuris for phaco and VR training. There are two cameras feeding to a LCD TV screen, to facilitate teaching. We have a surgical skills board available for suturing training.

There are national courses run all throughout the year. Also trainees from West Midlands Deanery use the facility to help with their surgical requirements. Currently, the School of Ophthalmology runs one session of phaco training in any calendar month. At present, we have one session per month to be supervised by a consultant and one to be supervised by a senior trainee. Each session will run from 9.00 to 12.30. All the phaco training sessions have a consultant or a nominated senior trainee.

Sessions could be booked for glaucoma procedures, suturing practices, etc. There will be a nominal fee towards the costs of maintaining and buying the equipments. This should be made against your study leave budget.

The facility can be rented for commercial or non-commercial courses.

To book a place for training purposes, please contact Manjit Gill or Kate Martin.

To book a place for commercial purposes, please contact Mr Maged Nessim, Director of BMEC Surgical Skills Facility.
