Eye Hospital receives £17,000 charity injection

Wednesday 15th October 2014

THE Birmingham Midland Eye Centre (BMEC) has received more than £17,000 from the former Sandwell Lord Mayoress Linda Horton, who had selected BMEC as one of her two charities to support during her year in office.

Following last year’s announcement of support for BMEC, Linda spent her year tirelessly fundraising with the aim of the money raised being used to direct benefit patients. She explained: “This hospital treats a large number of  people from Sandwell, and it has been my pleasure to meet many of them. I have never heard any complaints about the treatment they received, so I am very proud to make such a contribution towards this worthy cause.

“My husband Roger has undergone major operations for eye injuries at BMEC. The fact that Roger can see today is a miracle. The staff at BMEC did everything in their power to give Roger the best treatment available and we are very grateful to them for all they have done.

“I feel that nothing is too much trouble for the staff here. Everybody here is like part of family.

“I hope that the money will make significant difference to the patients and their family.”

Mr Ash Sharma, Consultant Ophthalmic surgeon at BMEC added: “We are privileged and honoured to be chosen as one of the two charities that the former Lord Mayoress supported. We are delighted to receive this gift and we will ensure it is used for deserving causes which will deliver direct benefits to our patients.”

Mr Arijit Mitra, a consultant Ophthalmogist, who had performed the second and the third operation on Mr. Roger Horton, continued: “At BMEC, we always strive to provide the best possible patient care. I would like to sincerely thank Mr and Mrs Horton for selecting BMEC as the Sandwell Mayor’s charity. It is wonderful for all the hardworking staff at the Eye Centre to receive some of the recognition that they truly deserve.”
